Problem

VDOT lacked the necessary information in Wise County to develop work and budget programs for a 5.3-mile section of Route 23.

Solution

Using the newly created maintenance consulting services contract, VDOT hired PILLAR to gather the required information.

Approach

Using conventional GPS survey equipment and methods, we spent 108 manhours locating and condition-assessing the drainage system along 5.6 centerline miles of Route 23. We identified 353 drainage items including:

• 290 pipes (including driveway)
• 29 inlet structures
• 34 ditches

In addition, PILLAR provided 6 critical areas requiring immediate maintenance for VDOT to address.
