Don't Base Your Workplans on Conjecture. Know the Location of Your Pipes.

Pipe Inventory

Three Fredericksburg Pipes

Problem

VDOT Fredericksburg needed to develop work plans for the upcoming year based on needs for drainage projects, but didn’t have locations or condition assessments. They wanted to collect pipe locations and conditions on I-95 and US Route 1 prior to the end of the fiscal year to develop data-driven work plans and budgets for the following year.

Solution

VDOT Fredericksburg hired PILLAR to perform the location capture and inspections using our field GIS collection software management system, InfraTrak. Using InfraTrak, PILLAR crews inventories, and condition-assessed 725 pipes on 94 centerline miles of I-95 in the last 2 months of a fiscal year and 763 pipes on 45 centerline miles of Rt. 1 in the last 2 months of the subsequent fiscal year.

Approach

PILLAR crews performed data collection services to develop work needs and verify asset location and conditions in Stafford, Spotsylvania (excluding Fredericksburg city limits), and Caroline Counties. They georeferenced road design plan sheets into the GIS mapping program to streamline the collection process. When gathering data on I-95, our experts collected assets along the mainline and all ramps up to the terminus of the radius of the ramps. For Route 1, at intersections, we collected assets until the terminus of the cross-street radius. Stand-alone driveway culverts were not inspected or obtained.
